Corrosion Solutions For Marine Applications

Maritime sectors involved in transportation, energy production, navigation and national security all depend on safe, efficient maintenance of their marine structures. This poses an ongoing challenge due to these structures existing in the harshest and most corrosive environment on the globe. Due to the nature of saltwater conditions the need for reliable corrosion prevention strategies is critical to ensure limited operation failure and combat the devastating damage to your marine structures caused by corrosion.

Cathtect has the solution for all your marine corrosion needs, get in touch with our team today to learn we can best serve you.

The marine environment is hostile to ferrous metals, such as steel and iron, and without the proper safeguards in place, the high salt content in the water and air can quickly degrade these metals. That is why you should make every effort to ensure your asset is protected from the dangers of corrosion, rusting and potential long-term effects thereof.

Our team of experienced and AMPP certified CP2 technicians and CP4 specialists are always ready to offer advice, expertise, and customized solutions for all your marine structure cathodic protection requirements. We service a wide variety of marine applications.

Once the extent of the corrosion to the steel in seawater (marine structure) is established. The process of protecting further damage via CP is in principle quite simple. In the majority of cases all that is required is the correct anode specific to your application, a power supply, and engineering talent or support. A protective circuit is then accomplished between the anode, steel (cathode), power supply and electrolyte (seawater)

Marine asset owners and stakeholders often mistakenly believe that coating submerged steel is all that is required to adequately fight against the enemy better known as corrosion. This is however, not the case because majority of coatings can be damaged during construction or rapid water flow rates leaving areas of the structure still exposed.

It has been shown that in clean bare steel the normal rate of corrosion is at least 5mm per year. In Marine environments this loss in material thickness is greatly accelerated by variations in water composition, oxygen concentration cells associated with marine growth, and water velocity. Thus rather than only relying on coating materials, the most preferred strategy for corrosion protection in marine structures is cathodic protection (CP).

Cathodic protection is by definition is the utilization of electrochemical reactions to prevent the corrosion of steel structures. By applying a direct current to the surface of the metal, the CP system causes the electrochemical potential of the structure to shift from a corroding state to a polarized and non-corroding state.

Cathtect USA is a technical leader in the cathodic protection industry. Our promise is to strive to be a one-stop cathodic protection solution to the maritime industry providing quality service and support
