Thermite Welding Materials, Accessories & Kits

Thermite welding is the exothermic reaction to produce coalescence between dissimilar metals. The name is derived from “thermite,” which is the generic name given to a reaction between metal oxides and reducing agents. Selecting the most appropriate welding material and ensuring you have adequate quantities for your specific application is crucial for a successful installation.

Cathtect USA offers a wide range of exothermic weld systems, accessories and kits for all Cathodic Protection applications, delivering cable-to-cable and cable-to-pipe connections that withstand the most demanding grounding, bonding and power applications. Let us assist you with the most compatible solution for all your thermite welding needs.

Description

Advantages of Thermite Welding

  1. Simple procedure to bond two similar or dissimilar metals together quickly
  2. The process is very economical and convenient with no costly power supply needed
  3. The thermite process is used in place where there is no availability of electricity

The Exothermic Welding Process

The thermite mixture used in the exothermic weld process consists of metal oxides with low heats of formation and metallic-reducing agents that, when oxidized, have high heats of formation. The excess heats of formation of the reaction products provide the energy source to form the weld.

It is important to note that Thermite weld processing should be applied only by skilled experienced field personnel.

The minimum distance of a thermite weld from a circumferential weld should be 200 mm. The minimum distance of a thermite weld from a longitudinal weld should be 40 mm. In attaching one wire to a pipeline, only one charge should be used. If the first thermite weld does not take, a second thermite weld should not be attempted on the same spot.

If a thermite weld is disapproved on the first charge, it should either be removed, the surface cleaned to bright metal, and the process is repeated or a new location on the pipe is selected.
