What is Cathodic Protection and how does it work?
Cathodic protection is a renowned and effective scientific technique that is used to prevent the corrosion and deterioration of metals. It is used to protect industrial equipment and metallic structures such as steel pipelines, storage tanks, Marine Structures, Steel Reinforced Concrete structures, platforms and Vessels. Corrosion occurs in structures that are located in water, underground and environments that are exposed to the corrosion properties. these properties include factors such as; PH; Moisture; dissimilar metals, heat, abrasion to mention just a few. If it is not addressed timeously, corrosion can have harmful effects on metal structures and premature structural design life, fatigue, or failure.
Corrosion is a gradual process that breaks down the properties of metals; this deterioration is a byproduct of a chemical reaction that occurs between metals and their environment. Corrosion is a result of the redox reaction of iron and oxygen in an environment that has water or moisture. This chemical reaction effects the mechanical integrity of the structure via the electrical connectivity properties of the Cathode/Structure environment.
Corrosion protection is primarily addressed by selecting a quality and durable surface coating or covering forming a barrier in the corrosion Cell or cycle. However, this does not obviate the need for a Cathodic protection system. the Cathodic Protection system is a secondary form of defense and is a critical function as Assets and structures age and the coatings deteriorate, thus protecting the Structure from beginning through the Aging infrastructures life cycle and maintaining mechanical integrity.
The Cathodic protection System is a critical aspect to extending the structural integrity of the asset or infrastructure and service life. the Cathodic Protection System can be provided in a Galvanic/Sacrificial design or a Impressed Current system depending on the application and design requirements.
